Important announcements to all three classes

(The information here will also be emailed to your G.Preps. In the event that they do not inform you about it, please help to disseminate the information to one another because (a) I may not see you in class, which is why I am posting this here at this time, (b) I may forget [I’m growing old!])

1. Timed Practice on Monday 3 Sep 2007, 8am – 3pm

(i) Do be seated by 7.50am

(ii) Bring your own writing material & stapler

(iii) Your venues are listed on the board at the foyer; check it out, check it up!

2. RJC Common Test 2007 Paper

(i) 26/07, let me know if you can avail yourselves for an extra lesson on Friday (for a lesson on The Way to AQ), which is tomorrow, after 2pm. You do have a choice. If you are not able to make it for the extra class, and I don’t need everyone to be present, hand in your AQ part of the answers to me on Friday before you go home. I will mark them & retun them to you on Monday 7am.

For 13/07 & 19/07, as I have lessons with you on Friday,

(ii) Show me all your answers on Friday in exchange for the answer scheme (which is without the AQ answer)

(iii) We will go through The Way to AQ on Friday

(iv) All three classes to hand in your full answers on Monday 12pm (after your Mock Exam).

3. Reminder: Reading File

All three classes to submit all your Reading File latest 6pm on Monday. Put them neatly in empty boxes, labelled.

I will collect your Written Work File some time after the ‘holiday’.

4. Clarification

Drop by the page called The Unknowns some time, there may be surprises!

The e-learning task on Friday as mentioned in an earlier post is supposed to be the task for next Friday (of the ‘holiday’). Any trauma caused is strictly unintended.

5. Consultation

As I have not received any appointments from you folks, I may consider not turning up on Friday 7 Sep 2007 after all. Let me know before the end of this term if you intend to turn up on Friday. However, I will still be in school on Monday & Wednesday of the ‘holiday’.

Thanks, my classes & colleagues…

…for the thoughtful gesture of baking puffs and cookies for me (I’ve lost 6kg ever since the term started!) The other mug looks Pop-art-ish & it’s cool (I’ll need it for late-night coffees.)

…for the gel (Gatsby isn’t my brand but I’m sure it’ll come in handy after my Friday evening jogs in AJ) & the artistically colourful card. Pink. Wink.

…for the chocs & sweets as tokens of encouragement in the staffroom!

This is the song, la la la la, Elmo song

Elmo is cute and cuddly, but without the L, he’s emo. Everyone needs a little Vitamin L, Love. But Elmo is Dangerous, as Michael Jackson would sing. Aw! In fact, Elmo and Jacko have a lot in common: they all need the letter L. Elmo sounds like Jacko: I can’t tell if they are really straight. Aw! “Sleeping with children is magical! La la la!” I cannot imagine Elmo sleeping besides the innocent kids every night in their bed. Plus, Jacko and Elmo both have high Lead content in them to make them look better or whiter. See, everybody needs Vitamin L. They are dangerous.

GP e-learning task 1 for 24 Aug 2007

Holler 19/07, 13/07 and 26/07,

Welcome to your first ever e-learning task in Term 3.  Take this opportunity as a step closer to independent learning, a skill that will be with you for life.

Follow the instructions below for the task. It is a short activity and the estimated time to complete the mission is 25min, true to the AQ requirement.

Refer to the AQ Powerpoint handout that your G.Preps have prepared for you (the one with the two paragraphs. If you do not have it by any rare chance, here they are:

Author A’s paragraph:

Providing excessive help to poorer nations may be perceived as an act that undermines the sovereignty of the receiver. Just like a child that is constantly provided for by its parents, the poorer nation might be seen to be overly dependent on the rich nation as if the former were asking for pocket money or help tying its shoelaces. Not only is such relationship degrading, it threatens the poorer nation’s right to independence. The USA would never like to be known as an offspring of Britain: why would any other nations? To be independent and yet dependent on others somewhat smacks of neo-colonialistic influences. Thus richer nations may think twice about offering aid to poorer nations in excess of what could seem to threaten the latter’s existence.

Author B’s paragraph:

It is usually difficult to determine when and where the help given had been in excess. The nation receiving help knows better. She who receives help has the right to refuse; the nation that gives then has the duty to stop. If the poorer nation did not, the rich nation cannot be blamed if the were to be seen as surrendering its sovereignty to its white knight. Whether or not rich nations should offer help to the poorer ones—and to whatever extent—is the choice of the poorer ones.

Task:
1. Evaluate the two authors’ writings. Comment on each author’s view, adding your own. (Remember, this is similar to the picture-inference tasks you did in class this week.)
2. Relate your response to your country. (Not necessary Singapore; if you are a Malaysian, you can relate it to the Malaysia context.)
3. And of course, tell me if the two paragraphs are complementary or contrasting in terms of stand.

Post your answers here, under “Comments”. State your name.

Remember, take no more than 25min.

19 & 13 of 07: Complete this within your first period ideally; go off early if you can (preferably to the library to source for GP-related books: you’ll be surprised with what you can find there.)

26 of 07: Complete this over the weekend, and as said, you would not need more than 25min, especially when you have had the time to do the brainstorming segment in class already.

Class Reps of classes 13 & 19: Give me the names of absentees of the day.

*Don’t try to hide from me. I know where you are. So get back here and do your work. Heehee.
